How Technology Has Reshaped the MBA in Finance
Finance education has never stood still. Ledgers and calculators once defined the daily work of a finance student. Spreadsheets arrived later.
Finance education has never stood still. Ledgers and calculators once defined the daily work of a finance student. Spreadsheets arrived later. Today algorithms and cloud platforms are used for most routine tasks. This shift has forced finance MBA colleges to rethink what is taught and how it is taught.
From Spreadsheets to Smart Systems
It is a known fact that adoption of AI in finance has been rapid. Use among finance professionals was reported at 37 percent in 2023. The figure climbed to 58 percent in just one year. Agentic AI is another recent arrival. Only 6 percent of finance leaders were using it when one survey was conducted. Usage was projected to reach 44 percent by 2026. Tasks like forecasting or reconciliation or fraud screening are now being automated in many firms. Live operational data is used more heavily as well. A rise in such use over the past two years was reported by more than 60 percent of finance teams.
Changes Taking place in Curriculum
Syllabi have been updated to match these trends. Financial modelling is now taught with programming tools. Data analytics and machine learning are being added as core subjects. Simulation labs allow students to trade on virtual markets. Many MBA in finance colleges also invite practitioners to explain how live systems are managed.
Where Graduates Still Fall Short
A global survey of 1600 finance professionals exposed a gap. Basic or no skill in generative AI was reported by 72 percent of them. Nearly 41 percent said they were learning on their own. Concern about accuracy was voiced by 93 percent. Another study named generative AI as the largest skills shortage according to 56 percent of respondents. AI skills are treated as important during hiring by 85 percent of finance leaders.
Identifying the Right Degree
There are a number of aspects other than technology in this regard. Students should therefore examine how a programme balances tools with theory. Placement records of finance MBA colleges should be compared before a final choice is made. Visiting several MBA in finance colleges before applying is also advisable. Programmes that update their syllabus every year are likely to stay relevant. Considering how fast technology is moving it can be expected that demand for such graduates will keep growing.
