Wordle Variants: Quordle, Dordle, Nerdle, Heardle, Worldle Explained
Heardle Heardle plays the first few seconds of a popular song and you have to guess what the song is. As you guess incorrectly you get to hear more of the song.
Types of Wordle
As Wordle is incredibly flexible, it can be adapted to many different topics. Within months of Wordle going viral in early 2022, there were dozens of different Wordle variations. Each of these variations targeted different demographics and used different skills however they all used the same basic mechanic.
Dordle
This variation plays with two 5 letter words, meaning you have to guess both words with just 7 guesses. Like Quordle, each guess is applied to both Wordle boards. This means you have to be really careful when making your guesses as you have to consider both Wordle boards.
Best for: Wordle fans who want a bit of a challenge, but not as intense as Quordle.
Quordle
This is easily the most popular Wordle variation. You have 4 Wordle boards and 9 total guesses to guess all the words. All guesses will be applied to all 4 Wordle boards. You need to solve all Wordle boards to win.
Best for: A more advanced Wordle fan looking for a longer and more challenging game.
Octordle and Sedecordle
A more extreme version with 8 words to guess across 13 guesses. Sedecordle has 16 words.
Best for: An avid Wordle fan who has mastered Quordle.
Nerdle
Instead of 5 letter words, you have to guess an 8 character mathematical equation. However instead of guessing words, you have to guess valid equations (such as "48/6+2=10"). The colours also work the same as Wordle, with green for letters in the right place, purple for symbols in the wrong place and black for symbols not present.
Best for: Those who enjoy numbers over words. There is a mini version of Nerdle with a 6 character equation.
Heardle
Heardle plays the first few seconds of a popular song and you have to guess what the song is. As you guess incorrectly you get to hear more of the song. You can guess up to 6 times. Heardle was purchased by Spotify in 2022 and was discontinued.
Best for: Music lovers with a broad understanding of genres and can identify song intros.
Worldle
This version of Wordle (with an extra L on the end) involves geography. You get a silhouette of a country and must guess what it is. You will be told how far away your guess was and the bearing from your guess to the actual country for each incorrect guess.
Best for: Geography lovers or those looking for a way to learn world maps.
Absurdle
This is the ‘evil’ version of Wordle. Instead of a static word to guess, there is a list of words that gets updated after each guess. The game will always choose the response that leaves the largest amount of words. Eventually you will catch the game out but it may take many many more than 6 guesses.
Best for: Those looking for an extreme challenge. You should know some Game Theory concepts.
Fibble
This is basically a regular Wordle game with a twist. Each row of guesses will have one piece of incorrect feedback. You must work out which tile is wrong.
Best for: Advanced players looking for a logic puzzle.
Wordle in Different Languages
There are several Wordle clones for different languages:
Wordle ES - Spanish 5 letter words
Le Mot - French
Wordle Hindi - Hindi adaptations
This has widened the scope of Wordle to many non English speakers.
Variations
All of these variations have the same basic mechanics as Wordle. A set number of guesses, hidden target word and binary colour response. This shows how flexible the basic concept is and there is a variation for just about every interest (Equations, Geography, Music, Multiple Wordle Boards etc).
