Current RBI Floating Rate Bond Interest Rate and How It's Revised
If the NSC rate increases, the bond interest rate will also increase at the next review. If it falls, the interest rate on these bonds will also come down.
Whenever I look at an investment, I want to know two things. How much interest will I earn, and will that amount remain the same over time? These are important questions, especially when I plan to keep my money invested for several years.
RBI Floating Rate Savings Bonds are one such investment where the interest rate can change. These bonds are issued by the Government of India and have a maturity period of seven years. They pay interest every six months.
What makes them different is that the interest rate is reviewed twice a year. So, the amount an investor earns may change during the investment period.
What Is the Current RBI Floating Rate Bond Interest Rate?
The current RBI floating rate bond interest rate is 8.05% per annum. This rate applies from July 1 to December 31, 2026.
The rate has remained unchanged from the previous six months. Interest for this period will be paid on January 1, 2027.
Now, one thing I would keep in mind is that 8.05% is not the interest rate for the full seven years. The rate may go up or come down in the future.
This is why it helps to understand how the rate is decided.
How Does the Interest Rate Change?
The interest rate on RBI Floating Rate Savings Bonds is linked to the National Savings Certificate, also known as NSC.
NSC is a government savings scheme. The interest rate on RBI Floating Rate Savings Bonds is kept 0.35 percentage points higher than the prevailing NSC rate.
For example, the current NSC interest rate is 7.70%. When we add 0.35 percentage points, the rate becomes 8.05%.
The bond rate is reviewed every six months, on January 1 and July 1.
If the NSC rate increases, the bond interest rate will also increase at the next review. If it falls, the interest rate on these bonds will also come down.
For me, this is an important detail because the interest earned today may be different from what I receive a few years later.
How Much Interest Can I Earn?
Let me take a simple example.
Suppose I invest ₹1 lakh in RBI Floating Rate Savings Bonds.
At the current interest rate of 8.05%, I would earn ₹4,025 in six months.
If the rate remains unchanged for the whole year, I would receive ₹8,050 as total interest before tax.
The interest is paid directly into my bank account twice a year. It is not added to the amount I originally invested.
Also, the interest earned is taxable. So, I would consider the tax amount when calculating how much I actually earn.
Can I Withdraw My Money Anytime?
This is something I would check carefully before investing.
The minimum investment is ₹1,000, and there is no maximum limit. However, the bonds mature after seven years.
Unlike listed bonds available in the bond market, RBI Floating Rate Savings Bonds cannot be sold on a stock exchange.
Early repayment is available only to eligible senior citizens, subject to certain conditions.
So, if I think I may need the money within a few years, I would consider other investment options.
Final Thoughts
RBI Floating Rate Savings Bonds offer an option for people who want to invest in government-issued bonds and receive interest every six months.
The current rate is 8.05%, but it may change in the future.
I believe it makes sense to understand how the rate is calculated, when it changes and how long the money stays invested.
After all, choosing an investment is not only about the interest rate. It is also about knowing whether the investment meets our needs.
