A traveler discovers a hotel on their phone while waiting for coffee. Later that day, they compare prices, read reviews, check cancellation policies, and save a few options. A few days later, they return to the same trip—perhaps on a laptop, perhaps inside a travel app—and finally make the booking.
Nothing about that journey is unusual.
In fact, it reflects a larger change in the way people buy travel. Smartphones have become central to travel discovery and research, but the path from the first search to the final transaction is rarely as simple as clicking a "Book Now" button on the same device.
For travel businesses, that creates an important distinction: winning the mobile search does not necessarily mean winning the booking.
Mobile Has Become a Major Part of Travel Discovery
Travelers increasingly use smartphones throughout the early stages of trip planning. They search for destinations, compare hotels, check reviews, look at maps, compare prices, and save ideas for later. The growth of mobile booking itself shows how far this behavior has progressed. Phocuswright reported that mobile represented 46% of U.K. online gross travel bookings in 2024, with mobile expected to overtake desktop by 2026. In some supplier-direct segments, including car rental and rail, mobile already accounted for more than 60% of online bookings.
But "mobile travel" is not one behavior.
A traveler can use a smartphone for inspiration in the morning, compare options during the afternoon, return to a website from a laptop in the evening, and ultimately book through an app.
The travel journey is increasingly spread across stages:
- Discovery: finding destinations, hotels, flights, or activities
- Research: reading reviews and gathering information
- Comparison: evaluating prices, schedules, rooms, and policies
- Decision: narrowing the options

Expedia Group and Luth Research studied the online behavior of more than 70,000 travelers across seven markets. Their research found that travelers viewed an average of 141 pages of travel content during the 45 days before booking. U.S. travelers viewed considerably more, at 277 pages. Expedia also found that 80% of travelers visited an online travel agency at some point during the path to purchase, even when they ultimately booked elsewhere.
That finding changes the way the booking journey should be understood.
A hotel website may receive the final booking, for example, while another website influenced the decision. A search engine may generate the initial discovery, while an OTA supplies comparison information. A review site may build confidence, while a mobile app completes the transaction.
The booking itself is only one part of a much longer process.
And that helps explain why a traveler can spend hours researching on a phone without necessarily completing the purchase there.
Researching Is Different From Booking
Browsing a hotel on a smartphone is relatively easy.
A traveler can scroll through photographs, check reviews, compare room types, and look at prices with a few taps.

The company also noted that purchasing patterns differ between mobile app and desktop transactions, with mobile-app accommodation reservations tending to involve shorter stays and lower average daily rates.
The more useful conclusion is therefore not that "desktop wins."
It is that different environments can play different roles in the same travel journey.
A traveler may prefer a phone for convenience, an app for a fast repeat purchase, and a larger screen for a complicated comparison. The right experience depends on where the traveler is in the decision process.
Where Mobile Booking Friction Can Still Appear
Mobile devices are capable of handling sophisticated transactions, but the experience can still become difficult when a booking process asks users to do too much.

Baymard Institute research has repeatedly found that checkout complexity can contribute to abandonment. Its research specifically notes that excessive form elements are particularly problematic for mobile users because typing, editing, and selecting information is more difficult on a small screen.
For travel businesses, friction can appear when customers encounter:
- unnecessarily long forms
- forced account creation
- unclear pricing
- unexpected fees
- difficult date or room selection
- confusing cancellation policies
- payment steps that require too much manual entry
- pages that make comparison difficult on a small screen
None of these problems necessarily causes a traveler to abandon a purchase. But together they can turn a simple booking into a frustrating experience.
That distinction matters.
The goal should not be to force every traveler to complete the entire journey on mobile. The goal should be to make the journey easy wherever the traveler chooses to continue it.
Speed Still Matters—But It Isn't the Whole Story
A fast website is important, particularly when much of a travel brand's discovery traffic comes through mobile devices. Google's earlier mobile-speed research found a strong relationship between page load time and the likelihood that users would leave a mobile page. That research is historical rather than a 2026 measurement, but it remains useful in demonstrating a basic principle: people do not become more patient simply because a website is selling travel.
At the same time, speed cannot solve every conversion problem.
A page can load quickly and still make a booking unnecessarily difficult.

Travelers Move Between Websites, Apps, and Search
The modern travel journey also extends beyond the mobile-versus-desktop debate.

Expedia's path-to-purchase research illustrates how widely distributed this behavior can be. Travelers consume large amounts of travel content before booking and move among different resources during the process.
AI is adding another layer.
Phocuswright's 2026 research found that 56% of U.S. travelers had used AI for travel planning, booking, or in-destination assistance during at least one trip in the previous 12 months, up from 43% in the second half of 2025. Phocuswright also found that the share of travelers using general search engines for travel research declined from 51% in late 2024 to 36% in the second half of 2025, while generative AI platforms increased from 6% to 15%.
The implication is significant.
The travel customer journey is becoming less like:
Search → Website → Booking
and more like:
Discover → Research → Compare → Save → Return → Book
Those steps may happen across several websites, sessions, devices, and channels.

Travel businesses should design for the journey travelers actually take—not the journey they wish travelers would take.
Make mobile research easy.
Travelers should be able to quickly find:

- room or flight options
- cancellation policies
- reviews
- availability
- important restrictions
- useful comparisons
The objective is to make the research phase useful enough that travelers have a reason to return.
Make booking easy when the traveler is ready.
A mobile booking experience should minimize unnecessary effort.
That means:
- reducing unnecessary form fields
- supporting browser autofill
- offering convenient payment options
- making guest checkout possible where appropriate
- showing total costs before the final step
- keeping important booking information visible
- making errors easy to identify and correct
Make it easy to continue later.
Not every traveler is ready to buy during the first session.
Give them ways to continue the journey:
- save an itinerary
- save a hotel or room
- email a quote
- share an option
- return to a previously viewed booking
- synchronize information across devices where appropriate
A traveler who leaves the mobile site is not necessarily a lost customer.
They may simply be not ready yet.
Measure more than the final click.
Travel businesses should avoid judging every mobile visit by whether it produced an immediate booking.
Where their analytics capabilities allow it, they should examine:

- returning visitors
