Microscope Maintenance: How to Make One Instrument Last Twenty Years

There is a microscope in a college in Haryana that has been in daily use since the late 1980s.
Same body, same stage, same objectives. It still gives a clean image.
Two floors above it, in the same building, sits a much newer instrument with a fogged objective and a focus knob that drifts. Nobody has touched it in two years.
The difference was never the price. It was about ten minutes of care a week.
The single biggest killer is oil left on the lens
Immersion oil is essential for 100x work and genuinely destructive if you leave it there.
Overnight, it begins to harden. Over weeks it turns into a film that will not wipe off. Over months it can seep past the front element into the lens assembly, and at that point the objective is finished — replacement, not repair.
The fix takes fifteen seconds. After every session with oil, wipe the 100x objective with lens tissue slightly dampened with the cleaning solvent your manufacturer recommends. Wipe in one direction. Do not scrub.
And never, ever let a dry objective touch oil. If the 40x lens swings through an oiled slide, clean it immediately.
Clean glass, and only glass
Dust on optical surfaces is the second most common cause of poor images, and most people clean it badly.

Blow first. Use a rubber blower to remove loose dust before anything touches the glass. Grit dragged across a coated lens leaves permanent scratches.

Use lens tissue, not a shirt sleeve, not tissue paper, not a cotton cloth.

Never dismantle objectives. They are sealed assemblies with precisely aligned elements. Once opened, they rarely go back together correctly.

Clean eyepieces regularly — eyelash oil builds up there faster than anywhere else and softens the whole image.

Keep solvents off painted surfaces and away from the body seams.
If you see a dark spot that rotates when you turn the eyepiece, the dirt is on the eyepiece. If it moves when you move the slide, it is on the slide. If it stays put, it is on the objective. Ten seconds of diagnosis saves you cleaning the wrong thing.
Humidity and fungus, the Indian problem
This is the issue no imported maintenance manual takes seriously enough.
In coastal and monsoon-heavy regions, fungus growing on internal lens surfaces destroys more microscopes than any mechanical failure. It appears as fine branching threads across the image and it spreads.
Prevention is simple and almost free. Store the instrument with its dust cover on, in a cupboard with silica gel that is actually replaced when it saturates. Keep it away from windows and outside walls. In very humid labs, a low-wattage bulb inside a closed storage cabinet keeps the air dry enough to stop growth.
Once fungus is established inside an objective, professional cleaning is the only option, and it does not always fully work.
Handling and mechanical care
Carry it with two hands — one under the base, one on the arm. Always. A microscope dropped from bench height is usually beyond economic repair.
Rack the stage down and set the lowest power objective in position before storing. This protects the front lens from accidental contact.
Never force a focus knob. If it resists, something is wrong — the stage is at its limit, or the mechanism needs servicing. Forcing it strips gearing.
Switch illumination off at the end of the session, and turn the brightness down before switching on rather than starting at full power.
Build a simple schedule
Nothing complicated. A card taped inside the cabinet door is enough.
Daily: wipe oil, cover the instrument. Weekly: blow dust off the eyepieces and stage, check illumination. Monthly: check focus travel and stage movement for smoothness. Annually: professional service, alignment check, and re-greasing of the mechanical stage.
In teaching labs where twenty students use one instrument, add a simple usage log. Problems get reported far earlier when someone has to sign for the unit.
Service and spares matter more than you think
A twenty-year lifespan depends on parts still being available in year fifteen.
This is why buying from an actual manufacturer changes the maths. A microscope supplier and exporter in India that produces domestically can supply an objective, a stage, or a focusing assembly for an older model long after an imported unit has been discontinued.
