ISTA stands for the International Safe Transit Association, an organisation that develops test procedures and projects for packaged products and distribution systems.
ISTA tests are designed to evaluate how a complete packaging system performs. This generally includes:

● The primary package.
● Outer cartons or cases.
● Pallets and unit loads.
● Strapping, wrapping or securing materials.
● Labels and handling features.

ISTA Test Series Explained
ISTA Series 1: Integrity tests
The ISTA 1 Series focuses on basic integrity testing. It is generally used to assess the strength and robustness of packaged products without fully simulating a specific distribution environment.
Examples include:
● ISTA 1A for packaged products weighing 68 kg or less.
● ISTA 1B for packaged products weighing over 68 kg.
● ISTA 1C and 1D for extended integrity testing.
● ISTA 1E for unitised loads.
● ISTA 1G and 1H for packages subjected to random vibration.
ISTA Series 2: Partial simulation tests
The ISTA 2 Series combines elements of basic integrity testing with selected aspects of general simulation testing.
Examples include:
● ISTA 2A for packaged products weighing 68 kg or less.
● ISTA 2B for packaged products weighing over 68 kg.
● ISTA 2C for furniture packages.
These procedures are useful when a manufacturer wants more comprehensive evaluation than a Series 1 test but does not require the full distribution simulation of a Series 3 procedure.

The ISTA 3 Series is intended to simulate the hazards of a particular distribution system. It may include sequences of atmospheric conditioning, compression, vibration, shock and other tests.

● ISTA 3B for less-than-truckload shipments.

ISTA 3A is particularly relevant to products shipped through parcel networks, where packages may experience frequent handling, conveyor transfers, vehicle vibration and drops.
ISTA Series 4: Enhanced simulation tests
The ISTA 4 Series is used for packaged products transported through known distribution channels. It allows the test plan to reflect specific hazards, handling methods and environmental conditions associated with the actual supply chain.
