Most of us see bricks only after they've arrived on site, stacked in a truck or piled up near a half-built wall. Red, rectangular, a little dusty. Nothing special.
But every brick has been through a surprisingly long journey before it gets there. Days of preparation. Hours of heat. And quite a lot of things that can go wrong along the way.
Here's what actually happens inside a modern brick manufacturing factory, step by step.
Step 1: Choosing the right clay
It all starts with the soil. Not every clay makes a good brick. Too much sand and the brick crumbles. Too much fine clay and it shrinks and cracks while drying. Too much lime and white spots may appear later.
So a good brick factory in India first studies its clay, checks its make-up, and often blends clay from different sources to get the right mix.
Step 2: Weathering and preparation
Freshly dug clay is usually left to rest and weather for a while. Exposure to air and moisture helps break down lumps and makes the clay easier to work with. Stones, roots and other bits that could weaken the brick are removed.
Step 3: Mixing and pugging
Next, the clay is ground, mixed with the right amount of water and kneaded thoroughly in a machine called a pug mill. The aim is simple. Every part of the clay should have the same texture and moisture. Uneven clay means uneven bricks.
Step 4: Extrusion
This is where machine made bricks get their shape. The prepared clay goes into an extruder, which removes trapped air and forces the clay out through a shaped opening called a die. Out comes a long, continuous column of clay.

Step 5: Wire cutting
A frame of thin, tight wires slices the moving column into individual bricks of the exact same size. That's where the name "wirecut brick" comes from. It's quick, clean and very accurate.
Step 6: Drying
Honestly, this is the step where patience matters most.
Fresh bricks, called green bricks, still hold a lot of water. If they dry too fast, the outside shrinks before the inside and the bricks crack. So they are dried slowly and evenly, either in covered sheds or in controlled drying areas, until most of the moisture is gone.
Step 7: Firing
Now the dried bricks go into the kiln. They are fired at very high temperatures, typically somewhere around 900 to 1,100°C depending on the clay and the product. At these temperatures, the clay particles fuse together and the soft brick becomes hard, strong and durable.
Firing is a careful balance. Under-fired bricks stay weak and absorb too much water. Over-fired bricks can warp or turn brittle.
Colour is decided here too. The same clay can turn out lighter or darker depending on the temperature and how the kiln is run. That's why manufacturers who make exposed bricks watch their firing so closely, because a small change can make one batch look different from the next.
Step 8: Cooling
Bricks can't be pulled straight out of a hot kiln. They're cooled gradually to avoid sudden temperature shock, which could cause hidden cracks.
Step 9: Sorting and quality checks
Once cool, bricks are sorted. Broken, cracked or badly coloured pieces are separated. Good manufacturers also test samples for size, compressive strength and water absorption to make sure each batch meets the required standard.
Step 10: Stacking and dispatch
Finally, bricks are stacked neatly for delivery. Careful loading reduces breakage on the road and makes unloading on site faster and safer.
