Gul Rune is a valuable Diablo II: Resurrected crafting resource, supporting powerful Runewords like Rift and Death for specialized character builds.

In D2R, a Gul Rune is valuable because it can go into two notable Runewords: Rift and Death. That makes it tempting to stash every Gul you find, but its real value depends on your build and whether you have a suitable base ready. If you're weighing a craft against gear for your character, compare your options for D2R Ladder Items before committing a rune you may not replace soon.

What makes a Gul Rune valuable in D2R

Gul is a high-level rune, but the rune by itself won't improve your character. Its payoff comes from completing a recipe that suits your build, and both Rift and Death need more than Gul alone. The other runes, the weapon base, and the character using the finished item all matter.

That's why I wouldn't treat Gul as a quick fix for a weak weapon slot. If your current setup is holding up, keeping the rune gives you room to make a deliberate choice later. If a specific craft would solve a real problem for your character, saving it indefinitely can be just as wasteful as spending it on gear you'll replace soon.

Which D2R Runewords use Gul

Rift and Death both use Gul, but they lead to different kinds of weapons and suit different plans. Rift is made in a four-socket polearm or scepter, while Death calls for a five-socket sword or axe. Check the item type and socket count before you put any runes into a base.

Rift's spell procs give it a distinctive feel, so it can appeal to builds that want more than straightforward weapon damage. Death is a different choice for a character built around a hard-hitting melee weapon. Don't pick between them just because Gul appears in both recipes; consider which finished item you'll actually equip and what your build needs.

The base deserves the same attention as the rune. A correct socket count isn't enough if the item type is wrong, and a weapon that looks promising may not suit your character's stats or playstyle. I'd settle on the recipe and base first, then gather the remaining runes, rather than slotting Gul and hoping the rest of the plan falls into place.

Should you save or trade a Gul Rune

Save it if Rift or Death is part of a build you're actively putting together, especially when you already have the right base. That turns the rune into a clear step toward a finished weapon, rather than a vague promise of future power. If neither Runeword fits your character, holding Gul is still a reasonable choice while you decide what you want to build next.

Trading can make more sense when you have no use for either craft and another item would immediately help your current character. Just weigh what you're giving up against what you'll receive; Gul's appeal comes from its options, not from being automatically better than every other upgrade. Your priorities can also change as your gear and build take shape.

In short, Gul is worth planning around, but it isn't a reason to force a Rift or Death craft that doesn't suit you. Check your build, confirm the base and recipe, then either save the rune for that weapon or look for an item that better fits your needs.
