Google Workspace Suspended and Reactivate Is Greyed Out
Learn why the Google Workspace Reactivate button is greyed out when an account is suspended, common causes, the 24-hour waiting period, and how to restore access.
I received an email through one of my less active blogs. A reader who runs a small online business had followed some of my advice, opened the Admin console, found her assistant's account and clicked around looking for the Reactivate option. She couldn't use it. She asked what she was doing wrong.
I had no idea! I only blog about things I have actually learnt. I told her I would look into it and spent an evening finding out.
She wasn't doing anything wrong. The system was just doing exactly what it was designed to do.
Google Workspace suspended: what type is it?
This was the most helpful part. The word suspended means a few different things, and why it has been suspended decides what you can do.
Google have a page explaining how to restore a suspended user. It lists the reasons it may be suspended. If it has been suspended by an admin, it can be reactivated. If the user might be at risk, you need to go through the security checklist first and then reactivate. If it has been suspended for not following the Terms of Service, Google say it cannot be recovered.
Her assistant had been sending lots of emails to customers regarding a sale. His Gmail had been suspended, but the rest of his account was working. If just the Gmail part of the account has been suspended by Google, his Drive and Calendar will still work. He just couldn't send or receive any emails. This also created confusion as the account wasn't fully suspended.
Why the Reactivate option may not show
Google have a page for restoring a suspended Gmail account. This was the page I finally found. It states that if the Reactivate option isn't available, you need to wait up to 24 hours for the limits to reset.
This was the answer. No hidden settings to change. Just a waiting room.
Google don't use the term greyed out. This term is just used in forums, which made it difficult to search for. I tried searching Google Workspace suspended in around 10 different ways before finding the correct page.
This page also states other reasons why you may not be able to restore the account.
-
It has already been suspended 5 times in the same calendar year.
-
In extreme cases, Google ask you to wait 24 hours.
-
It has been automatically suspended by Google due to abuse.
-
It is on the legacy free edition of G Suite.
The 5 times is the strict one. Once you reach it, no one can reset it, including Google Support. After 24 hours, it will automatically be enabled.
If you do successfully get it restored, the account will be enabled within 15 minutes.
What I told her
Overall, I told her to do the following. I would recommend this to anyone.
-
Read the reason it is suspended on the user's account.
-
Find out if it is the whole account or just Gmail.
-
If the Reactivate option isn't showing, note down the time and wait 24 hours.
-
Don't click around. It won't help and will only frustrate you.
-
Use the time to figure out why it has been suspended so it doesn't happen again.
The last one is the most important part. Most of the time, a Gmail account being suspended will be down to a reason. In this case, her assistant had been sending lots of emails. While waiting, you can sort out how the emails are being sent. Otherwise, you're just wasting your 5 attempts.
If you want a clear example of this, GenZ Pro have a great section on when the Reactivate button won't work. I sent this to her alongside my notes.
What actually happened
She waited. It was annoying having to wait, but in the meantime her assistant used his phone to communicate with customers. The next day, the Reactivate option was back. She clicked it and shortly after his emails were back.
She replied, saying that the worst part was not knowing if anything was happening. I think this is true for most tech issues. If you know there is a timer going, you can make a cup of tea. But if you think you've broken something, you will click everything!
If you're looking at a Google Workspace suspended screen, and the button you need isn't showing, take a deep breath. It could just be a timer. Find out why it is suspended and how long you need to wait.
