What Makes Fonetic English Different from Other Reading Systems
Respelling systems, phonics programs and pronunciation apps all try to make English decodable. Fonetic English takes a different route: it never changes the spelling.
English has been an awkward language to teach for as long as anyone has been teaching it, and the attempts to fix that go back well over a century. Fonetic English is the most recent of them. What separates it from earlier attempts is a single design decision: the spelling of the word is never altered. Pronunciation information is added on top of standard spelling, so the learner is always looking at the real word.
Understanding why that decision matters means looking at what everything else does instead.
The respelling approach, and why it keeps failing
The most obvious solution to an inconsistent writing system is to make it consistent. Rewrite the words so they say what they sound like. The Initial Teaching Alphabet, widely trialled in British and Australian classrooms in the 1960s, did exactly this, using an expanded alphabet so that beginners could read text that behaved predictably.
It worked, up to a point. Children did learn to read the modified text quickly. The problem arrived at the transition. Having learnt to read one version of English, they then had to learn the version that actually exists in books, on signs and in every document they would ever encounter as an adult. Some made the switch easily. Others did not, and the ones who did not had effectively been taught a writing system with no future.
Pronunciation respellings in dictionaries carry a milder form of the same problem. Reading "nuh-SESS-uh-ree" tells you how to say the word. It teaches you nothing about how to spell "necessary", because you have been looking at a different string of letters.
The IPA approach
The International Phonetic Alphabet is precise, complete and used by linguists worldwide for good reason. As a tool for a beginner or a self-directed learner it has an obvious cost. It is a second symbol set with no relationship to the alphabet the learner is already struggling with. To use it, you first have to learn it.
For a linguistics student that investment pays for itself. For an adult learning English after work, or a nine year old who is behind in reading, the barrier arrives before any benefit does.
The phonics approach
Systematic phonics teaches the relationships between letters and sounds directly, and the evidence supporting it is strong. It should be the foundation of early reading instruction. That is not in dispute here.
The limit is structural rather than pedagogical. Phonics teaches the rules of a writing system, and English follows its rules unreliably. Research on orthographic depth suggests roughly three quarters of English words cannot be decoded accurately from spelling alone. A well taught phonics program equips a child to handle the portion of English that behaves. The remainder still has to be memorised, and memorised words need something like twenty to fifty exposures to stick, against two to five for a word that can be decoded.
Phonics is necessary. On its own it is not sufficient, and the size of the gap is what the cross-linguistic research keeps showing.
The comparison that makes the point
Seymour, Aro and Erskine compared early literacy across thirteen European countries in 2003 and found that children learning transparent orthographies such as Finnish reached reliable decoding within roughly six months, while English speaking children needed closer to two and a half or three years for equivalent accuracy. Paulesu and colleagues had reported a related finding in 2001, showing that Italian readers with the same underlying difficulty as English readers presented with markedly milder problems in practice.
Neither result says anything about the children. Both say something about the writing systems.
What Fonetic English does instead
The system marks standard English text rather than replacing it. Syllable boundaries are shown, with stressed and unstressed breaks distinguished so the learner knows where the emphasis sits. Long vowels are marked separately from short. The persistently confusing cases get their own marks, including the vowel in "put", voiced "th" as in "this" against unvoiced "th" as in "think", and the small added "u" sound that appears on certain consonants.
Every letter of the original word stays where it was. That single constraint dissolves the transition problem that sank the Initial Teaching Alphabet. There is nothing to unlearn, because the learner has been reading correctly spelt English the entire time. It also means the same passage of marked text is simultaneously a reading exercise and a spelling exercise, which is not true of any respelling system.
Where the scientific grounding comes from
The method was developed in collaboration with Professor Emeritus John Sweller of UNSW, who originated cognitive load theory and is one of the most cited researchers in educational psychology. Sweller co-authored a white paper on the system with founder Christopher Stephen in May 2024 and has described the work as "a series of brilliant innovations that will revolutionize language teaching".
The design follows from the theory rather than being decorated with it afterwards. Cognitive load theory holds that working memory is severely limited and that instruction fails when it is overloaded. An unmarked English word forces a learner to guess at pronunciation while also holding meaning, syntax and context. Marking the pronunciation removes one of those loads. Christopher Stephen came to this from accessible publishing rather than from language teaching, with more than twenty years in the field and a background in mathematics, physics, economics and law from the University of Sydney. The system is protected by patents granted in Australia and South Africa, with applications filed in the United States, Canada, India, Japan and China.
The short version
Respelling systems change the word and create a transition problem. The IPA adds a symbol set and creates a barrier. Phonics teaches rules that English only partly obeys. Fonetic English marks the word without touching it, which is a smaller intervention than any of those and, because the spelling survives intact, a considerably more durable one.
