When money and time are limited, engineers choose 316L stainless steel. Because many buyers of stainless steel 316l sheets & plates in India work on projects where the risk of corrosion is known to exist, they may encounter severe exposure to chloride in a process stream, work in a coastal environment, or have a pharmaceutical process that requires repeated cleaning with harsh chemicals. Clients understand and appreciate that this grade of steel costs more than 304 and is selected with a purpose. Ultimately, what is most frustrating is when the materials delivered do not live up to even the most basic specifications.

Occasionally, grade 316L stainless steel is extremely difficult to distinguish and specify. A sheet of 304 steel, although it may not look the same on paper, behaves identically and can be easily specified and sold as 316L stainless steel. The difference between the two will be seen years later on a weld line in the form of a pit, or in surface rust and a failure to maintain a clean, easily corroded surface. The best defense against sub-spec material used by dishonest suppliers is to understand the significance of the low carbon designation.

 

What Differentiates The Low Carbon Designation

Each, respectively, contain 16-18% chromium, 10-14% nickel, and 2-3% molybdenum. 316L and 316 stainless steels are the same composition except that 316L contains carbon at 0.03% or less, and 316 contains carbon at 0.08%. In both cases, 316 contains approximately 50% more molybdenum than 304. 316 shows superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in the presence of chlorides when compared to 304. In fact, sea water, brine, de-icing chemicals, and numerous process chemicals attack 304, while 316 remains relatively intact.

The L designation for 316L indicates lower carbon content than standard 316, and this distinction, though seemingly minor, is actually very significant. Upon heating stainless steels to approximately the 425-870 deg C range, which occurs during welding, carbon migrates to grain boundaries and combines with chromium to form carbides. These carbides tie up chromium, making the passive oxide film deplete. Thus, a zone will corrode preferentially in an intergranular attack. Erosion will occur along the grain boundaries next to the weld with the parent metal remaining uncorroded.

With the absence of carbon, this reaction is inhibited. A welded 316L assembly will retain its corrosion resistance in the heat affected zone, and post weld solution annealing will not be required, which is extremely difficult to do on a large fabricated vessel. In any fabricated assembly that will be subjected to corrosion after welding and is done by welding, then the low carbon version is the only option available.

Chemistry Verified by Spectrometer, Not Paperwork

Ask for a positive material identification test at dispatch. A spectrometer can read molybdenum content in seconds and answer the 304 versus 316 question. Carbon content is a laboratory analysis and is on the mill test certificate, which should be stamped with a heat marking matching the marking on the material. Decorative certificates are worthless to suppliers who welcome third-party inspection from TUV, SGS, Lloyd’s, or BV. Those who avoid third-party inspection are signaling something other than confidence.

 

Tolerances and Surface Condition

Take a reading with a micrometer to check for thickness. Material supplied on the thin end of tolerance yields less metal for the money over the course of a large shipment. Also check the flatness since the sheet that has taken a set in storage creates fits and starts at the fabrication stage. In the plate, look for rolling defects, laminations, and edge conditions.

 

Contamination Control and Concerns Regarding Transfer

There are so many opportunities for transfer and contamination in the warehouse. Carbon steel slings, tools that are used for cutting, and even direct contact with concrete will transfer ferrous particles. These particles will rust and lead many to assume a grade failure, when in fact it was caused by contact with a crane sling. Lead Times to Consider

Thicknesses that are standard and common sizes are readily available for stock. Finishes that are outside of the norm, or dimensions or thicknesses that are outside of the normal stock range, can take anywhere between 4-12 weeks (approximately). Imported materials can take additional time to clear customs. A supplier promising to fabricate custom electropolished plates in one week is likely offering stock plates and promises that end poorly for the client.
