Rajat Khare Calls for India Built AI Systems to End Brain Drain
Rajat Khare says India can become a global AI leader by building its own AI system and stopping brain drain. He stresses stronger research funding, better industry-academia partnerships, and support for innovation. India’s multilingual AI potential and growing digital infrastructure can help drive inclusive, world-class AI development.
Rajat Khare, founder of Luxembourg-based deep-tech investor Boundary Holding, believes India can become a global AI superpower by building its own artificial intelligence system and retaining local talent. He argues that India has the engineers, data scientists, and IT professionals needed to lead the AI revolution, but brain drain remains a major barrier. Around 15% of the global AI workforce works outside their home countries, and many skilled Indians move abroad for better pay, research facilities, and international exposure—benefiting global innovation but slowing India’s long-term progress.
Khare says India must strengthen its innovation ecosystem through better industry-academia partnerships, higher funding for AI and deep-tech research, and improved opportunities for researchers. He also highlights India’s rapid digital growth and government efforts to develop a domestic large language model supported by over 18,600 GPUs.
A key advantage for India is multilingual AI. With 22 official languages and many dialects, India can build culturally relevant AI systems that expand access for non-English speakers, improve governance, and support rural communities. Khare believes the shift from brain drain to brain gain is possible through strong policy, investment, and vision.
