Narendra Damodardas Modi was elected as India's 15th Prime Minister in May 2014. He was re-elected from Varanasi in the 17th Lok Sabha and led the Bhartiya Janata Party to a landslide win in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He was the Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014 before becoming Prime Minister.

He had formerly been a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Modi has single-handedly created the BJP the most powerful party in the country, with control over the majority of the state. On July 20, he easily defeated a no-confidence motion launched by the TDP against his cabinet. On social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, Narendra Modi is one of the most popular names. The ascent of Modi in the BJP has been remarkable. Modi made his national debut after leading his party to three consecutive electoral victories in Gujarat. Modi was elected as the prime ministerial candidate for the Lok Sabha elections in 2014 over heavy resistance from party patriarch LK Advani. His ascent to the top seat, however, highlighted internal divisions within the party. The BJP crushed the Congress-led UPA in 2014, riding on his tsunami.
