My Life as a BSc Student in Mumbai: Advantages and Disadvantages

What is BSc in my life? 

When I touched down in Mumbai to begin my BSc adventure, I knew life was about to turn upside down – just not that much. This city has an energy to it and living here as a student is one hell of a ride. My First Day in College

The first day, I arrived on campus with excitement and apprehension. Students teemed through the corridors, seniors were already hard at work thinking of strategies for the upcoming fest and professors did not waste time in ensuring newcomers knew they would have it tough here. I had feelings of worry and excitement: You couldn’t be more excited about moving to the “big city,” and at the same time, you couldn’t be more afraid of how your life will change.

One huge plus is the education itself. My teachers are not just teachers, they are my mentors. The labs are well resourced and the hands-on make learning fun. It makes science feel like a live subject if you are actually using theories you learnt in class on a real experiment.

In Mumbai, opportunities are everywhere. Volunteering for a research work, finding an intern or going to special seminars, the city gives you what would have been difficult in smaller towns. Sometimes it all feels like you need to snatch what comes through the door.

Evening walks around Marine Drive, street food at Mohammad Ali Road and midnight hostel gossips — these are the moments that balance out the rigorous academic stress. And college fests? It’s like a celebrity-packed once-in-a-lifetime experience where there’s just celebrities, music and talent everywhere.

Challenges of Studying BSc in Mumbai

• Pocket Crunch in Pricey City

As fantastic as the city is, it’s also expensive to live in. Rent, travel, food — it all adds up fast. Even eating vada pav every day begins to pinch the pocket after some time. It's a lesson all Mumbai student has to grapple with: how to handle money!

• Competition Everywhere

Competition is fierce with so many talented students in the mix. Even minor issues such as grabbing a front bench in class or vying for roles in the college committee get competitive.” Sometimes, it feels overwhelming.

• Academic Pressure is Real

BSc is not only “scoring marks and chilling.” Labs, reports, exams assignments — it piles up fast. Sometimes I feel so tired and worn down. But I suppose that’s college anywhere — it gets you ready for the real world.

What This Journey Taught Me

In retrospect, I think Mumbai has taught me lessons no lecture hall ever could. I have learned how to stand alone, fight for my place in the world, see every rupee as a gemstone and always look for opportunities. Life in a BSc college in Mumbai isn’t exactly ideal — it’s a train-wreck of ups and downs — but it’s turning me into somebody stronger, more anatomically adapted to dealing with circumstances.

If you’re planning on studying in Mumbai, be aware: the city will test you but it’ll also take you to places that you never knew existed. At the end of the day, it’s not simply about that degree; it’s also about who you become while getting that degree.”
