How to Study in UK from Pakistan – Step by Step Roadmap
So for a one year master's, you pay £470. For a three year bachelor's, you pay £1,410. 5. Book your biometric appointment In Pakistan, you do this at a VFS Global centre.
I have lost count of how many Pakistani students have sat across from me and said the same thing. "I want to study in the UK, but I have no idea where to start."
And honestly, I understand. The UK has been a top destination for Pakistani students for decades. The universities are world famous. The one year master's degrees save you time. The two year post study work visa gives you room to breathe. But the application process? It can feel like a maze.
Over the years, we at GoGrad have helped hundreds of Pakistani students find their way through that maze. We are proud to be recognised as Pakistan's No.1 study abroad consultants. Whether you are searching for study abroad consultants in Lahore or specifically looking for study visa consultants in Lahore, we have the experience to guide you.
In this roadmap, I will walk you through every single step. No fluff. No jargon. Just a clear path from where you are now to landing at a British university.
Let us begin.
Step 1 – Decide What and Where You Want to Study
Before you do anything else, answer two simple questions. What subject do I want to study? And why the UK specifically?
Why the UK?
There are good reasons why thousands of Pakistani students choose the UK every year.
First, the universities are among the best in the world. Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, Manchester, Edinburgh – these names open doors. Employers know them. Your CV will stand out.
Second, master's degrees take only one year. In most other countries, you need two years. That means you pay less in tuition and living costs, and you enter the job market a full year earlier.
Third, the Graduate Route visa gives you two years to work after your degree. Three years if you finish a PhD. That is valuable international experience.
Fourth, the UK is multicultural. You will find Pakistani communities in every major city. Halal food is everywhere. Mosques are within walking distance. The culture shock is much smaller than you might think.
Choosing Your Course
Do not pick a course just because it sounds impressive. Pick something that aligns with what you actually want to do as a career.
Ask yourself: What subjects did I enjoy most in my previous studies? What kind of job do I see myself doing in five years? Is there a skills shortage in that field in Pakistan or internationally?
Some of the most popular courses among Pakistani students are:
-
Business and Management
-
Data Science and Artificial Intelligence
-
Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Software)
-
Law
-
Medicine and Healthcare
-
Computer Science
-
International Relations
Choosing Your University
Do not just look at overall rankings. Look at how strong the university is in your specific subject. A university might be ranked 50th overall but 5th in the UK for your subject. That matters.
Also consider location. London is exciting but expensive. Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Glasgow, and Sheffield are more affordable and still have excellent universities.
Cost of living varies a lot. London will eat up your budget quickly. Northern cities are much gentler on your wallet.
At GoGrad, we help students shortlist universities based on their grades, budget, and career goals. We do not push you toward one place. We listen and find what fits.
Step 2 – Check the Admission Requirements
Every UK university has different requirements. But there are common patterns.
For Bachelor's (Undergraduate) Programs
| Requirement | Typical |
|---|---|
| HSSC / FSc | Minimum 60% to 70% |
| A-Levels | Grades between ABB and AAA depending on university |
| IELTS Academic | 6.0 to 6.5 overall, no band below 5.5 |
| UCAS application | Personal statement + reference letter |
Some universities offer foundation years if your grades are slightly below the requirement. That adds one year to your studies but can be a good pathway.
For Master's (Postgraduate) Programs
| Requirement | Typical |
|---|---|
| Bachelor's degree | Minimum 2.5 to 3.0 CGPA (or 55% to 65%) |
| 16 years of education | Most UK universities require this |
| IELTS Academic | 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0 |
| Work experience | Required for some courses like MBA |
| Statement of Purpose | Essential |
| Two letters of recommendation | Required |
For PhD Programs
| Requirement | Typical |
|---|---|
| Master's degree | Strong grades |
| Research proposal | Detailed plan of your intended research |
| Supervisor acceptance | You need a professor to agree to supervise you |
| IELTS | Usually 7.0 or higher |
English Language Requirements
Most Pakistani students need to prove their English ability. The most accepted test is IELTS Academic UKVI. This is different from regular IELTS. Make sure you take the UKVI approved version.
Some universities accept other tests like PTE Academic or TOEFL. Check with your chosen university.
Can you study in the UK without IELTS? Rarely. Some universities waive the requirement if you completed your previous education in English medium and can provide a Medium of Instruction certificate. But most still want IELTS. Do not count on a waiver.
At GoGrad, we guide you on exactly which test to take and what score you need for your shortlisted universities.
Step 3 – Prepare Your Application Documents
This step takes time. Start early. Do not rush.
For Undergraduate (UCAS)
You need:
-
Personal statement – one long essay explaining why you want to study this subject and why you have chosen the UK
-
One reference letter – usually from a teacher or college professor
-
Academic transcripts – SSC and HSSC
-
English test score (if already taken)
You apply through UCAS. This is a central portal for all UK undergraduate applications. You can apply to up to five universities with one application.
The UCAS deadline for most courses is 31 January for entry in September of the same year. Oxford, Cambridge, and medicine have earlier deadlines in October.
For Postgraduate
You apply directly to each university. Each has its own portal. You will need:
-
Statement of Purpose (SOP) – this is your chance to tell your story. Why this subject? Why this university? Why the UK? What do you want to do after?
-
Two letters of recommendation – from professors or employers who know your work well
-
CV – in UK format, highlighting your academic and professional achievements
-
Academic transcripts and degree certificates – attested by HEC
-
English test score
-
Passport copy
Writing a Strong Statement of Purpose
I have read hundreds of SOPs. The best ones are specific, honest, and personal.
Do not write generic sentences like "I have always wanted to study abroad." Tell them what actually motivated you. Maybe a teacher inspired you. Maybe you worked on a project that sparked your interest. Maybe you saw a problem in Pakistan that you want to help solve.
Show them that you have researched their university. Mention specific professors, modules, or facilities that attracted you.
Explain your post study plans. Even if you want to stay in the UK, show that you have thought about how this degree fits into your career.
Keep it to one or two pages. Be concise. Proofread carefully. A single spelling mistake can leave a bad impression.
At GoGrad, we review your SOP and give you honest feedback. We do not write it for you, but we help you make it stronger.
Step 4 – Apply and Wait for Offers
Once your documents are ready, submit your applications.
Undergraduate applicants use UCAS. You will receive a UCAS ID number. Track your applications online.
Postgraduate applicants apply through each university's portal. Some use a common system called "UKPASS", but most have their own.
You may receive two types of offers.
Conditional offer – you have been accepted, but you need to meet certain conditions. For example, you might need to achieve a specific IELTS score or complete your current degree with a certain grade. Once you meet the conditions, the offer becomes unconditional.
Unconditional offer – you have already met all requirements. You can accept it straight away.
Some offers come with scholarships attached. Read the details carefully. Some scholarships require you to accept the offer by a certain date.
When you receive an offer, you will usually need to pay a deposit to secure your place. This deposit ranges from £1,000 to £2,000 and is often deducted from your first tuition fee.
Do not delay accepting your offer. Places fill up quickly.
At GoGrad, we help you track your applications, understand offer conditions, and make informed decisions about which offer to accept.
Step 5 – Get Your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies)
Once you have accepted an unconditional offer and paid your deposit, your university will issue a CAS.
CAS stands for Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. It is a unique reference number. You cannot apply for your student visa without it.
The CAS contains information about you, your course, your tuition fees, and the amount of money you have already paid.
Check the CAS very carefully. Any mistake – a wrong date, a misspelled name, an incorrect course title – can cause your visa to be refused.
The CAS also includes a list of documents you provided to the university. Make sure that list is accurate.
You have six months from the date of your CAS to apply for your visa. Do not wait until the last minute.
Step 6 – Show You Have Enough Money
This is the part that stresses students out the most. But it does not have to be complicated.
How Much Do You Need?
You need to show two things. Your tuition fees for the first year of your course. And your living costs for up to nine months.
Tuition fees – this amount is written on your CAS. It varies by university and course. For Pakistani students, tuition typically ranges from £10,000 to £30,000 per year for master's programs. Bachelor's programs are similar.
Living costs – if you study in London, you need to show £1,334 per month for up to nine months. That is £12,006 total. If you study outside London, you need to show £1,023 per month, which is £9,207 total.
So if you are studying a master's outside London with tuition of £15,000, your total required funds are:
£15,000 (tuition) + £9,207 (living) = £24,207
If you have already paid a deposit of £2,000, you can deduct that from the tuition amount shown on your CAS.
Where Does the Money Need to Be?
The money must be in your bank account or your parents' bank account. It must have been there for at least 28 consecutive days. The end of that 28 day period must be no more than 31 days before the date you apply for your visa.
If the money is in your parents' account, you also need:
-
A letter from your parents confirming they are sponsoring you
-
Evidence of your relationship (birth certificate or family registration certificate)
-
A letter from your parents explaining the source of the funds (salary slips, business income, etc.)
What Type of Bank Account?
A personal savings account or current account. The money must be readily available. Investments, shares, property, or gold do not count. Fixed deposits may be accepted if you can withdraw the money immediately.
Important: The funds you show for living costs cannot be the same money you already paid as tuition deposit. They are separate.
At GoGrad, our Funds Calculator helps you figure out exactly how much you need to show. No guesswork.
Step 7 – Apply for Your UK Student Visa
Now comes the visa application. This is where study visa consultants in Lahore like us provide the most value.
Step by Step Visa Process
1. Create an account on the UK Visas and Immigration website
Start your application online. You will need your CAS number.
2. Fill out the visa application form
Provide your personal details, travel history, and information about your studies in the UK. Be honest. Any lie, even a small one, can lead to refusal.
3. Pay the visa fee
The standard student visa fee from outside the UK is £363. You can pay for priority service (£500) for a decision within 5 working days, or super priority service (£1,000) for a decision within 1 working day.
4. Pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)
This gives you access to the UK's National Health Service. The IHS is £470 per year of your course. So for a one year master's, you pay £470. For a three year bachelor's, you pay £1,410.
5. Book your biometric appointment
In Pakistan, you do this at a VFS Global centre. You can choose from locations in Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, or other major cities. During your appointment, you will provide your fingerprints and photograph.
6. Submit your passport and supporting documents
You will need:
-
Your passport (valid for your entire stay plus some extra time)
-
Your CAS (the reference number, not the document itself)
-
Proof of financial means (bank statements)
-
Your IELTS UKVI certificate
-
Your academic transcripts and certificates (attested)
-
Tuberculosis test certificate (from an approved clinic in Pakistan)
-
Any previous UK visas (if applicable)
7. Attend a credibility interview (if required)
Some students are called for a short video interview with a UKVI officer. They will ask questions about your course, your university, your plans after graduation, and your financial situation. Be honest and confident.
How Long Does Processing Take?
Standard applications take about 3 weeks after your biometric appointment. Priority service takes 5 working days. Super priority takes 1 working day.
Do not book your flight until you have your passport back with the visa vignette inside.
TB Test Requirements
Pakistani students must have a tuberculosis test at an approved clinic. The test is valid for six months. Schedule it early. The results are usually ready within a few days.
Common Visa Refusal Reasons
Here is what we see most often:
| Reason | How to Avoid |
|---|---|
| Insufficient funds | Use our calculator, keep money in account for 28 full days |
| Wrong IELTS type | Take IELTS Academic UKVI, not general or non-UKVI |
| Documents not attested | Get HEC and IBCC attestation before applying |
| Fake documents | Never, ever use fake documents. Permanent ban. |
| Credibility issues | Be honest. Prepare for your interview. |
At GoGrad, we review your entire visa application before you submit. We have done this hundreds of times. We know what the visa officers look for.
Step 8 – Arrange Your Accommodation and Travel
Once your visa is approved, the real excitement begins.
Finding a Place to Live
Start looking for accommodation as soon as you accept your university offer. Do not wait until you have your visa.
Your options:
-
University halls – safe, convenient, and good for meeting people. Apply early because spaces fill up fast.
-
Private student accommodation – companies like Unite Students, iQ, and Student Roost offer purpose built student flats. Slightly more expensive but often nicer.
-
Private renting – cheaper but more work. You need to find flatmates, sign a lease, and deal with landlords.
Most students live in university halls in their first year. It is the easiest option.
Rent varies. In London, expect £800 to £1,400 per month. In Manchester, Leeds, or Birmingham, expect £500 to £800 per month.
Booking Your Flight
Book your flight for one to two weeks before your course starts. This gives you time to settle in, open a bank account, and attend orientation events.
Direct flights from Islamabad, Lahore, or Karachi to London, Manchester, or Birmingham are available. Compare prices. Sometimes flying mid week is cheaper.
Packing
Pack light. You can buy almost everything in the UK.
Bring:
-
Your passport and visa
-
Your CAS and offer letter
-
Your academic documents (original attested copies)
-
Enough money for your first few weeks
-
UK adapter plugs (type G)
-
Warm clothes (autumn and winter can be cold)
-
Prescription medications (with a doctor's note)
Do not bring:
-
Large kitchen appliances (buy them there)
-
Too many winter clothes before you know what you need
-
Unofficial copies of anything
Step 9 – Arrive and Settle In
You made it. Now the real journey begins.
First Week Checklist
1. Collect your BRP (Biometric Residence Permit)
Your visa vignette is valid for 90 days. Within that time, you must collect your BRP from a designated post office or from your university. The BRP is your actual residence permit. Keep it safe.
2. Register with the police
Some Pakistani students need to register with the local police within 7 days of arrival. Check your visa or BRP for instructions. It usually applies to students from certain countries.
3. Open a UK bank account
You need a UK account to receive money from home, pay rent, and get a part time job. Most students choose Lloyds, Barclays, HSBC, or Monzo.
4. Register with a GP (doctor)
You paid the IHS, so you can use the NHS. Find a GP surgery near your accommodation and register. This is important if you get sick.
5. Get a UK SIM card
EE, O2, Vodafone, and Three are the main networks. Pay as you go plans are cheap. You can get a monthly contract after you have a bank account.
6. Attend university orientation
Do not skip this. You will learn about your course, meet other students, and get a tour of the campus.
Part Time Work
You are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full time during holidays. Popular part time jobs for students include:
-
Retail (supermarkets, clothing stores)
-
Hospitality (cafes, restaurants, bars)
-
University campus jobs (library assistant, student ambassador)
-
Tutoring (English or academic subjects)
The minimum wage for students aged 21 and over is about £11.44 per hour. If you work 15 hours a week, you can earn around £700 per month – enough to cover most of your living costs.
But do not rely on work to pay your tuition. Treat it as extra support.
At GoGrad, we share tips from our students already in the UK about where to find part time jobs and what to avoid.
Step 10 – After Graduation: Post Study Work and Beyond
You finish your degree. Now what?
Graduate Route Visa
This is the biggest recent change to UK student visas. It allows you to stay and work for two years after your degree (three years for PhD). You do not need a job offer to apply.
What you can do on the Graduate Route:
-
Work in most jobs (full time, part time, freelance)
-
Look for work
-
Switch to a skilled worker visa if you find a job that sponsors you
What you cannot do:
-
Bring dependents unless they were already with you
-
Extend the two years (except PhD to three years)
-
Access public funds
Skilled Worker Visa
If you find a job that is on the UK's shortage occupation list and the employer sponsors you, you can switch to a skilled worker visa. After five years on this visa, you can apply for indefinite leave to remain (permanent residency).
Returning to Pakistan
If you choose to return, your UK degree will give you an advantage in the Pakistani job market. Multinational companies, banks, and development organisations actively recruit returnees.
Many of our students at GoGrad have gone on to successful careers both in the UK and back home. The degree opens doors wherever you go.
