What Is an EWP Yellow Card and Who Actually Needs One

Whether you have just entered the construction industry or you are considering entering the industry, you've likely heard of the EWP Yellow Card.

Whether you have just entered the construction industry or you are considering entering the industry, you've likely heard of the EWP Yellow Card. Perhaps it was a topic your employer discussed or you noticed it in an ad for a position. If you're not 100% certain of what it is or if you need it at all, you're not the only one. A lot of people starting out feel the same way so let us just go through it properly.

So What Actually Is the EWP Yellow Card

Put simply the EWP Yellow Card is a certification that proves you have been trained to operate an Elevating Work Platform safely. It is issued by the Elevating Work Platform Association of Australia after you complete training through a registered training organisation. Most people in the industry just call it the Yellow Card and once you have it your employer can see at a glance that you know what you are doing on the machine.

The card covers EWPs up to 11 metres in height. That includes things like scissor lifts, vertical lifts and smaller boom lifts. If you are working on a boom lift that goes higher than 11 metres that is a different story and you would need a high risk work licence instead. But for most people doing everyday work at height the Yellow Card is what you are after.

The training itself is built around a unit of competency called RIIHAN301E. When you finish the course through a registered RTO you get a Statement of Attainment along with your Yellow Card and that certification is recognised by employers right across the country.

Who Needs One

Honestly if your job involves stepping onto any kind of elevated work platform up to 11 metres you need to have this sorted. It does not matter whether you are in construction, facilities management, warehousing or general maintenance. If you are getting off the ground in one of these machines the Yellow Card is what shows you have been properly trained to do it.

A lot of workers think they can just hop on a scissor lift and figure it out as they go. And maybe nothing goes wrong most of the time. But the one time something does go wrong and you do not have the right certification, the situation gets complicated very quickly. For you, for your employer and potentially for the people working around you on that day.

Most employers these days will not even let you near the equipment without seeing proof of your training first. So if you are serious about working in an environment where EWPs are used regularly it is really just one of those things you need to have done.

What Does the Course Involve

This is the part that surprises most people. It is not a full week of training or anything like that. The Yellow Card course is generally done in a single day and it is very hands on.

You will go through the theory side first which covers things like how to do a proper pre-start check, how to identify hazards before you operate, what the load limits mean and what you are supposed to do if something goes wrong while you are up in the air. It is practical information that actually applies to real work situations rather than stuff you will never use.

Then you get onto the machine itself with a qualified trainer watching over you and you go through the practical assessment. Once you pass both components you walk away with your Statement of Attainment and your Yellow Card on the same day.

Yellow Card vs High Risk Work Licence

Just to clear this up because it does confuse people. The Yellow Card is for EWPs up to 11 metres. Anything above that and you are looking at the TLILIC0005 course which gets you a high risk work licence through Workplace Health and Safety Queensland. They are two completely separate certifications and some workers end up needing both depending on what equipment they are operating on site.

Wrapping It Up

At the end of the day the EWP Yellow Card is not something to overthink. It is a one day course, it is straightforward to complete and once you have it you can get on with the job knowing you are covered. Whether you are just getting started or you have been putting it off for a while, getting your Yellow Card sorted is one of the better decisions you can make for your working life.
